ING Direct is a bank. It’s not pronounced ”-ing” like “bank-ing”, which is a common misconception. It’s prounouced by saying the letters: eye – en -gee. They are strictly online banking with no tellers or physical locations to conduct your money business.

So why even use it this type of bank?

First of all, ease of access. We’re online all the time, why not run our checking accounts, our mortgage, our investments while we’re surfing the Web? They also offer customer service via phone or mail if that’s your choice.

Secondly, all the choices they offer: Savings, Home Loans, Investing, Business Savings, and Retirement. Basically all of these assets ING offers with no fees, a competitive interest rate, and easy to use online forms so you can do almost everything yourself.

The website is easy to navigate and all you need to get started in an outside account to link your ING account to. This has been a great way to save for many people for two reasons: you can put your money where you can’t see it unless you’re online and it takes 1-2 days to get your money OUT of ING so it makes you think twice about transferring.

Customer service has alwasys been top notch, with answered emails and phone calls within hours, not days.

If only physical banks were this efficient!

There is a small office that focuses on better hearing for its customers via hearing aids and tests. Amdahl Hearing is actually a small company under the umbrella of Audigy Group, which is known for housing some of the most elite private practices across the country. They pride themselves on customer service and have won awards for their ability to serve the customer’s needs.

Amdahl recently became affiliated with Audigy Group, which is a huge accomplishment. I went to visit them a couple weeks ago to entertain the notion of hearing aids (I’m 33 years old and only have lost 18% of my hearing which is significant). Immediately upon walking in their office, I felt comfortable and at ease. The lobby is very nicely laid out with the option of cookies and coffee set up in an attractive array. The doctor and front desk receptionist were both impeccable in their manners. They spoke loudly and clearly and included the person I brought with me in the conversation.

The cost for hearing aids of course is extremely high, but after hearing my concerns, they looked into getting me a (cleaned up, non-gross) demo pair for a cheaper price. They seemed to want me to hear better no matter what, even if it meant taking a pay cut for themselves.

There are so many different kinds of hearing aids on the market today, but Amdahl/Audigy offer a private-label brand which is supposed to be top of the line. Amdahl spent a lot of time and money researching many different brands and decided on the AGX brand. Like I said, expensive but they offer a 3-year warranty included in the price, checkups anytime, and batteries for three years. plus one year interest free financing.

After having all my questions answered and feeling very confident about the path they were suggesting, they let me try on a demo pair they had in the office. The difference was indescribable and they were just a non-fitted demo pair.

I know this medical expense isn’t for everyone, but after working with the Amdahl/Audigy Group, I’m confident and satisfied with the service they offer.

As the world becomes more automated, we’re forced to choose: people help or computer help? For me it depends. If it’s a complaint, I feel more comfortable writing my thoughts out and sending an email. If it’s too long to explain in writing, I much prefer an actual person to speak with.

However, sometimes you choose wrong.

Case in point: there is a grocery store chain called Cashwise that is scattered across Minnesota and North Dakota. They’re affiliated with Coborn’s, which also creeps into South Dakota as well. They’re not known for being the most organized, but when I’m trying to save a buck, that’s where I go for groceries.

It’s about 1:30 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon. I’d gotten off work early to comp some hours and figured that would be a good time to get some food staples. Wrong. It was busier at 1:30 than it’s EVER been at 5:00 p.m. when I normally go. I kept thinking: “Don’t people work during the day?”

After finding everything on my list, I went to check out. There are approximately 18 check out lines, and only five were open. Five. And each lane had at least five people waiting. They were bunched up against the wall facing the registers, waiting their turn. I guesstimated it would take at least 10 minutes for me to get through, so I decided to be smart and use the self-check out lane. Yeah. Smart.

I had an authorized Cashwise box instead of using plastic bags and I started ringing up my groceries and placing them in my box. But the computer kept telling me to place my items in the bagging area (apparently I might be trying to steal them away in my purse). Um, I don’t want to USE the bagging area. So I kept hitting the “Do Not Need to Bag This Item” button. But after I do that three times, it tells me to “Please Wait for Assistance”. So a human type person has to clear something out so I can continue.

After three times of being assisted by a human, she told me I had to move my box to the OTHER side of the bagging area. Okay, that would’ve been nice to know earlier. So I moved my box and continued on, only to find that some of my items were so light (think: lettuce) that it didn’t register and the (slowly getting crabbier) woman had to come clear my computer again. She actually said it was “getting mad” at us. Um, I’M getting mad actually.

Then I tried to ring my coupons through, but the computer asked me to place THEM in the bagging area. I had three coupons so that prompted another visit from the human.

Finally, FINALLY I was able to pay and get out of there, noting the people that were leaving from the people-run registers were about where I would’ve been had I gone through.

I turned and said to the lady behind me “Good luck” and hightailed it out of there.

Lesson learned.

Surffc.com is now offering a Premium Proxy service which provides only proxies that are proven to work with sites requiring SSL such as banks, online email services such as hotmail and gmail, as well as with applications such as MailerKing. The proxies all have a response/load time of under 4 seconds and are constantly tested. Whilst there isn’t a massive number of proxies available through this service (averages around 60), the quality of them certainly makes it worth adding to your list of proxy providers.

The cost per month is little hight than the standard service at $20 per month, but again includes a 6 days trial ($4.00).

A key thing to remember is that the proxies can be delivered to you however you want, if you don’t mind paying an additional fee – e.g. to have them emailed is an extra $2.50 per month, or to have your own page setup with the proxies presented according to your requirements, there’s just a once off fee of $10.

Now, don’t get me wrong, these still aren’t as good as dedicated private proxies, but are hard to beat for the money.

Now, I’m not sure about the chosen domain name for this proxy service (surffc.com) – looks like it has been used for a few different things previously. There are tons of free sites proving lists of proxies, but Surffc provide working proxies only. The way they do this is to grab lots of these lists, and add them all to their database, and then delete all of those that are Codeen/PlanetLab as well as the transparent proxies. They then test each of the proxies to ensure that they are fast (that is to say they can load a web page in under 6 seconds), and then work out which country they’re in.

Now, whilst they claim that all proxies in their proxy list are working, it seems to me that it depends what exactly you’re planning to use these proxies for. Sure they work for loading Google’s home page, but most of us want proxies to do something a little more interesting than this. You need to remember that these proxies are being shared with not only the other members of Surffc, but also with any number of other Internet users.

All up the service is only $12.50 per month, and for forum posting or doing other general work they’re ideal, and very good value. If you’re wanting to post on Craigslist however, I’m sorry to say you’re going to have to go buy some private proxies instead.
